Course objectives
Students will acquire basic knowledge of environmental legislation and the evaluation of the impact of air pollutants on selected components of the environment, in particular materials of cultural and historical monuments.
Syllabus
  • 1. State policy in the environment and legislative security environment in the country. The management system of environmental protection in the country. Legislative ensure the protection of nature and landscape in the country.
    2. Sustainable Development. The exponential growth of the human population. Global environmental problems of the environment. Nature conservation and sustainable development.
    3. Assessing the impact on the environment. Assessment of potential effects of planned yet non-existent projects and buildings on the environment. The extent of documentation. The role of the process of assessing environmental impacts in major local, regional and national projects.
    4. Composition and stratification of the atmosphere. The composition of the atmosphere and weight. Thermal stratification. Characteristics of natural factors and anthropogenic activities leading to pollution of the atmosphere.
    5. The selected air pollutants. Causes and effects of air pollution. Emission, transmission and immission of pollutants. Effects of pollutants on human health, nature and material goods.
    6. The influence of air pollutants on living organisms and ecosystems. Effects of gaseous air pollutants (sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ammonia and ground-level ozone), particulate and suspended particulate matter on vegetation.
    7. Characteristics of materials of cultural and historical sights (iron, steel, zinc, copper, bronze, limestone, sandstone). Types of corrosion. The consequences of physical and chemical damage to cultural and historical monuments. The strategy of cultural heritage protection against environmental influences.
    8. The influence of air pollutants on the corrosion of metals and materials of stone. Atmospheric corrosion. The rural environment, urban environment and industrial atmosphere.
    9. Assessment of the impact of air pollutants on corrosion of materials of cultural and historical monuments using batch-reaction functions. Acceptable and the current degree of corrosion of materials (iron, steel, zinc, copper, bronze, limestone, sandstone). Acceptable levels of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and ozone.
    10. Influence of acid atmospheric deposition on acidification and eutrophication of forest ecosystems. Critical loads (acidity, nitrogen) of forest land and critical concentrations of selected air pollutants.
    11. International programs mapping critical loads and concentrations of the UNECE. Mapping of critical loads of sulfur and nitrogen.
    12. Evaluation of ground-level ozone on forest ecosystems.
