Course objectives
Developmental Psychology expands on knowledge of general psychology and personality psychology. Instruction aims at providing basic knowledge on somatic and psychological development of humans across the lifespan - the prenatal and neonatal stages, infancy, toddler stage, pre-school age, school age, pubescence, adolescence, early/mid-/late adulthood and old age. On completion of the course, the student will be orientated in key theories and key characteristics of ontogenesis and will have developed a theoretical and practical foundation for further study of applied disciplines in psychology and pedagogy. Seminars/practicals constitute an integral part of the subject.
Syllabus
  • 1. Delineation, subject and objectives of developmental psychology, its position in the system of disciplines, its relation to other scientific disciplines, specific sub-disciplines of developmental psychology. An overview of the history of developmental psychology.
    2. Research methods in developmental psychology, longitudinal, semilongitudinal and cross-sectional research methodology.
    3. The concept of psychological development - factors, key mechanisms, principles of development, theory of determination, stages of development. Theory of mental development behaviourism, psychodynamic theory (S. Freud), psychosocial theory (E. Erikson), cognitive development theory (J. Piaget), social-cognitive theory (L. S. Vygotsky), evolutionary theory (J. Bowlby, M. D. Ainswort).
    4. Prenatal and neonatal period.
    5. Infancy and toddler stage - development of gross and fine motor skills, perception, development of pre-speech phenomena, cognitive development, socialization.
    6. Pre-school age - development of basic abilities and skills, cognitive development, child identity development, emotional development, socialization. School maturity. School readiness.
    7. Early and mid-school age - development of basic abilities and skills, cognitive development, emotional development, socialization.
    8. Pubescence - somatic changes, main psychological features of teenage years, development of basic abilities, skills and interests, cognitive development, identity development, emotional development and socialization.
    9. Adolescence - identity development in adolescence, socialization, relations to adult individuals and peers, entering a first job position.
    10. Early adulthood - cognitive development, socialization, identity in early adulthood; professional roles, partnership, marriage, parenthood, reviewing.
    11. Mid-adulthood - somatic changes, changes in professional roles, changes in partnership, changes in parental roles, changing relationship to parents, identity in mid-adulthood.
    12. Late adulthood - somatic changes related to ageing, cognitive processes, personality development and changes in roles, professional roles, marital relations in persons in late adulthood, the grandparent role.
    13. Old age and ageing - somatic changes, psychological changes, retirement, marital relations, relationship to children and grand-children, lifestyle changes, dying and death

Independent work is based on:
1. Comprehension reading of compulsory literature and solving heuristic assignments.
2. Preparation of psychological autobiography based on two developmental theories selected by the student.
Assessment: submission of a written report on solved assignments (heuristic problem-solving and knowledge and skills development, see also Iljuk, B. Základy psychologie v heuristických otázkách a úlohách).
