Course objectives
The seminar is focused on understanding the structural changes in the society of the Czech lands from the end of the 18th century to the interwar period. The methodological basis consists of a critical theory of modernization, respectively the concept of modernization processes, as well as the work of Niklas Luhmann, Pierre Bourdieu or Jürgen Habermas. Within the individual seminars, the current results of research on individual thematic segments will be analyzed in the form of a guided discussion. Emphasis will be placed on critical evaluation and interpretation of different scientific theses and concepts.
Learning outcomes
The Ph.D. candidate will be familiar with current concepts and theories on modern history, taking into account the topic of the dissertation.

  • The seminar will take place in blocks. The individual blocks will focus on the following problem areas (taking into account the topic of the dissertation): Concepts of society: Luhmann's society as an autopoietic system and its subsystems, Pierre Bourdieu and the theory of relatively autonomous social fields National and other modern identities Towards an industrial society: the city and the countryside Towards civil society: voluntary association of citizens Work and leisure: social and cultural dimensions of category change
