- Course objectives
- The goal of the course is to make students familiar with the basic techniques of photographing the night sky. In photography the emphasis is on understanding the basic difficulties of working with digital sensors whether in the form of CCD and CMOS astro-photographical cameras, such as taking the photography by digital amateur or professional cameras. Greater emphasis is placed on the images taking by using the basic techniques. Usage of DIY techniques, such as Web cameras to image planets or moons, DSLR cameras for night shows, star-trails, night timelapses, detection of meteors by cameras or using available industrial cameras, etc. Minor emphasis is also placed on mastering the work with classical astronomical CCD recording technics.
- Syllabus
- The theoretical minimum. Exposure, lighting conditions, atmospheric conditions. Working with long exposures. Aperture, bokeh, optical defects and effect on the images. Physical limits of digital cameras, noise, CMOS vs. CCD, dark current, and more.
Atmospheric photographs. Photos of atmospheric phenomena. Rainbow, halo phenomenom, bending phenomena, auroras, noctilucent clouds.
Basics of astrophotography. Star-trails, eclipse photographs through a telescope (the primary focus for the eyepiece), covers. Photo processing.
Astrophotography webcam, photographing the sun, planets and moons DSLR at prime focus CCD astrophotography, observing meteors, amateur Fireball Network.
