Course objectives
The aim is to practice working with hardware and computer networks, especially hardware diagnostics, error detection, monitoring, network diagnostics.
Students will look at the typical features and technologies of various devices, identifying component information, benchmarking, testing components.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- understand the documentation of equipment and hardware components;
- determine parameters of the various devices and components using software tools and in documentation, find benchmark results for processors, graphics cards, etc.;
- compare and evaluate components according to available information;
- test components;
- detect and fix common device problems.
Syllabus
  • 1. Tools needed for repairs and adjustments.
  • 2. Commonly available software for basic diagnostics, component testing.
  • 3.-4. Motherboards, chipsets. Orientation in the motherboard manual.
  • 5. Processors: recognizing processor features, testing, benchmarks, overclocking, underclocking.
  • 6. Memory modules: properties, installation, latency, testing, overclocking.
  • 7. Storage media: testing, S.M.A.R.T. technology.
  • 8. Graphics chips and related technologies.
  • 9. Power and cooling. Protection of electronics against overvoltage and undervoltage, UPS, energy centre.
  • 10.-11. Maintenance and simple repairs.
  • 12. Computer networks, network devices, basic wireless network diagnostics. Antennas.
  • 13. Servers: Windows Server, Linux Server, installation, administration.

The student performs one of the randomly assigned tasks (finding a particular component according to specified criteria, performing or describing maintenance or repair procedure, evaluating suitability of a particular component for a given purpose, etc.).
Compulsory attendance at seminars min. 75 %.
