Course objectives
The aim of the course is to clarify the basic theoretical principles of translation, to introduce various translation approaches and methods, to point out various linguistic and non-linguistic pitfalls of the translator's work and their possible solutions. In the area of translation practice, participants will learn how the current translation market works, how to navigate in its highly competitive environment and how to respond to its various challenges. Computer-aided translation technologies will also be presented: specific software solutions in the field of CAT (Computer-Aided Translation) and the dynamically developing field of automatic translation will be presented. Students will experience working with these technologies through the SDL Trados Studio software, which is the global standard in computer-aided translation.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge of basic translation theory and terminology, familiarity with CAD tools.
Syllabus
  • 1. Theoretical approaches to translation: a historical perspective. 2. Theoretical approaches to translation: current state of the field. 3. Basic problems and pitfalls of translation: equivalence, translatability, information loss and gain. 4. Basic problems and pitfalls of translation: cultural and linguistic aspects. 5. Translation of artistic vs. non-artistic text. 6. Practical exercises: translation of short texts of different types. 7. The current translation market and its challenges. 8. The translator's background: dictionaries, terminology databases and other resources. 9. Principles and key technologies of computer-aided translation. 10. Automatic translation. 11. Management of terminology and other translation know-how. 12. Translation support software: an up-to-date overview. 13. Practical exercises: the basics of working with SDL Trados Studio software.
