Course objectives
The aim is to introduce the historical development of selected arts and crafts and give practical knowledge in the scope of arts and crafts with understanding their development and their resulting products. The subject matter would be also practiced in a seminar on examples including mainly the production of porcelain material, basic information about porcelain factories in Europe (Meissen, Vienna, Berlin and others.) The examples from Bohemian lands, basic information about the style and shape of product development of porcelain in a historical context, information about porcelain signs would be also outlined. The issue products of pottery, majolica and faience, with an emphasis on the production of faience in our area (Proskov etc.) would be also shown. The exercise would be focused on a basic description and on practical knowledge of porcelain, faience and ceramic products.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to: - describe the historical development of selected arts and crafts - identify and professionally describe art objects.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic introduction to the literature and to the issue of knowledge of ceramics and porcelain.
    2. The beginnings of porcelain production (the role of Marco Polo, Chinese imports, Medici-porcelain).
    3. The establishing of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory and the beginnings of porcelain production.
    4. Foundation of the manufacture and production of Viennese porcelain.
    5. Selected porcelain manufactories in Germany (Ansbach, Berlin, Frankenthal, Rosenthal, Neudeck-Nymphenburg ad.).
    6. Selected porcelain manufactories in our area (Březová, Loket, Dalovice, Děčín, Dolní Chodov, Doubí u Karlových Varů, Dubí u Teplic, Duchcov, Dvory, Epiag, Klášterec nad Ohří, Praha, Slavkov, Stará Role, Vranov nad Dyjí aj.).
    7. Earthenware, majolica, faience, Haban ceramics, Holíč, Proskov, Hranice.
