Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with the basic grammar of Old Church Slavic which is the oldest recorded Slavic language. The main focus is on the contrastive approach.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to: - describe the grammar system of Old Church Slavic in contrast to Czech - understand the differences in the declension of nouns in Old Church Slavic and Czech - understand the differences in the verbal system in Old Church Slavic and Czech - read Old Church Slavic texts in cyrilic

  • 1. Old Church Slavic and its positon among Slavic languages
  • 2. O-stems masculines and neuters, athematic verb "byti", verbs of the 1st thematic class
  • 3. A-stems, ja stems, jo-stems, short adjectives, 2nd and 3rd class thematic verbs
  • 4. Ja-stems adjectives, i-stems, 4th class thematic verbs, aorist
  • 5. U-stems, nt-stems, other athematic verbs, aorist
  • 6. N-stems, s-stems, imperfect, imperative
  • 7. R-stems, personal pronouns and demonstratives, perfect, plusquamperfect, conditional, future, supine
  • 8. ъv-stems, other demonstratives, interrogatives, participle present active
  • 9. Participle preterite active, participle present passive, participle perfect active
  • 10. Absolute and adnominal dative, numerals
