Course objectives
Literature will be presented as a specific discipline with similarities, but also differences from other disciplines. Students will get acquainted with the basic concepts of literary science in the field of prose, poetry and drama. At the end of the cycle, the course introduces the specifics of British and American literature. The aim of the course is to provide students with a good literary theoretical background and at the same time practical equipment for reading specific texts in follow-up teaching.
Learning outcomes
The student is able to define and recognize basic literary forms, genres and terminology. They will also learn to use the citation standard.
Syllabus
  • 1. What is literature, why do we read.
  • 2. Language of literary texts: figures and tropics.
  • 3. Classification of literature, literary genres.
  • 4. Prose: important concepts (characters, setting, story).
  • 5. Narratology, author-reader-text relationship.
  • 6. Drama: important concepts (characters, setting, ways of speaking).
  • 7. Types of drama.
  • 8. Poetry: important concepts; types of poetry.
  • 9. Poetic forms, prosodic means.
  • 10. Critical thinking, how to write a literary essay.
  • 11. Method of documentation of sources in the essay, citation standards.
  • 12. Specifics and brief overview of British literature.
  • 13. Specifics and brief overview of American literature.
