Course objectives
The aim of the lectures is to apprise students with the historical development of libraries and librarianship in the Czech lands from the beginning to the present. The history of libraries in the Czech lands is presented in the general context of the development of libraries and librarianship in Europe.
Learning outcomes
- describe the beginnings and development of libraries and librarianship in ancient civilizations,
- describe the main types of medieval libraries in the Czech lands and Western Europe,
- explain the main tendencies in the development of libraries in the modern era,
- explain the transformation of the function of the public and special libraries from the beginning of the industrial revolution to the end of the WWI,
- describe the place of the public library in the system of adult education in the interwar period in the Czechoslovakia and abroad (primarily in the USA, Great Britain, Germany),
- describe and explain the transformation of the purpose of the public library in Czechoslovakia after 1938.

  • 6.Private and institutional libraries in 15.-20. century.
  • 7.Subscription and public libraries in the Czech lands in the 19. century.
  • 8.Free libraries in the Czech lands in the second half of the 19th century.
  • 9.Anglo-American and German model of free libraries at the turn of the 19th and 20th century.
  • 10.Adult education 1918-1945.
  • 11.Libraries and librarianship in the Czech lands between 1918-1945.
  • 12.The main trends in the development of Czechoslovak librarianship after 1945.
