Course objectives
The student will be introduced to the general issues of IoT, and will get a comprehensive overview of applications for IoT, architecture, infrastructure and network security. The knowledge gained can be further expanded in the follow-up course "System Design with IoT".
Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, the student will be introduced to general IoT issues, IoT applications, architecture, infrastructure and network security.
Syllabus
  • 1. Characteristics of IoT

  • 2. History of IoT

  • 3. IoT applications and uses: industry, construction and manufacturing (smart factory), consumer use (smart home), retail network, financial management, medical and healthcare, transportation, transportation and logistics, agriculture and environment, energy and energy management , smart cities

  • 4. Sensors and end devices: thermocouples and temperature sensors, hall sensors and current sensors, Photoelectric and PIR sensors, active sensors, MEMS sensors (accelerometers, gyroscopes, pressure sensors)

  • 5. Power management: solar, piezo-mechanical, RF and thermal sources, electrical energy storage (batteries and accumulators, supercapacitors)

  • 6. IoT architecture: network architectures and topologies, ranges and coverage, energy consumption. Network features Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), ZigBee, 6LoWPAN, Thread, NB, LoRa, Sigfox.

  • 7. Communication protocols in IoT networks: MQTT, MQTT-SN, CoAP, STOMP, AMQP

  • 8. IoT

    Data Processing Servers and Cloud Storage
  • 9. Security in IoT networks: definition of security, analysis of possible attacks, physical and hardware protection, software protection, cryptography, government regulations

  • 10. IoT Alliances, Communities and Consortia

  • 11. Sustainability of the IoT

    system
  • In the exercises, the student will get a practical introduction to existing IoT systems on various platforms, including related data management on cloud services, and to diagnostic devices for simulating end units and testing of signal coverage.
