Course objectives
The aim of the course is to understand the issues of biological conditionality and social determination in the broader context of the development and formation of human personality with emphasis on the dialectical determination of speech development in relation to psychological processes. Attention will be paid to symptomatic speech disorders and the principles of designing support measures for the comprehensive development of man through alternative communication systems.

Expertise:
- student explains the factors influencing speech development
- the student describes the specific peculiarities of speech development in the context of disability
- The student knows the secondary consequences of symptomatic speech disorders
- the student is familiar with the terminology related to alternative communication systems
- the student understands the principles of building alternative communication systems
Professional skills:
- the student will learn the methods and procedures of application of selected communication systems
- the student is able to apply the elements of AAK in the stimulation program for children with OVŘ in the sense of natural support of speech and language development
- the student will gain experience with technical aids that mediate the process of communication
General competences:
- the student is able to adequately reflect the special needs of people in the field of communication
- the student is able to implement special pedagogical educational, reeducational and compensatory approaches to people with disabilities with the application of the principles of AAK
- the student is ready to cooperate with other experts not only in the field of special pedagogy in order to support communication skills through AAK

  • 1. Introduction to the study, definition of basic concepts.
  • 2. AAK systems and methods.
  • 3. Communication systems without aids.
  • 4. Communication systems with tools.
  • 5. Characteristics of selected AAK systems, practical examples.
  • 6. Aspects and rules of choosing an alternative communication system.
  • 7. Influence of swallowing function for speech production. Swallowing disorders.
  • 8. Use of AAK in the education of a preschool child.
  • 9. Possibilities of AAK in people with mental disabilities.
  • 10. Application of AAK in educational reality, support measures.
  • 11. Case studies of the application of AAK in the teaching of pupils with disabilities.
  • 12. Recapitulation of the curriculum.

Teacher's information
In course of continuous study, students use the study material, processing it to fulfil selected correspondence assignments which will be discussed in conclusion of the course. At the exam, students demonstrate knowledge of compulsory literature and lectures of the in-person instruction. Students will be able to continuously consult the topics studied individually or in teams, via e-mail, or in consultations upon request.
