Prerequisites
Assignments - written essay - 10 pages. The essay's theme should be connected with the course contents and study literature. The literature to be used should not be limited to the list of compulsory titles only. Student should prove basic orientation in the scientific literature devoted to the particular problems of the course contents and ability to discuss these problems and use theoretical arguments. Self-study of the textbook JANEBOVÁ, R. Sociální problémy z aspektu gender. Hradec Králové: Gaudeamus, 2006. Continual study of the compulsory and optional literature. Individual consultations in accordance to the needs of students. The condition to obtain the credit is to submit the essay.

Course objectives
LECTURE The course is devoted to the contemporary situation of theoretical reflections on gender problems and analysis of the Czech society from gender relations. The aim of lectures is to transmit the results of western feminist theory, theory and research in the Czech Republic and to offer the most complex review of the different subjects the gender theory is dealing with to the students The course will inform the students of representatives of gender theory in the Czech Republic as well as of different organizations which work within this framework. SEMINAR The aim of seminars is to enable students to learn how to use tools of gender analysis it the area of their future profession. The themes of seminar meetings are closely connected with those of lectures and partly also to themes of seminars of the course Introduction to Gender Studies. The difference is that now students are working with particular cases from contemporary life and analyze them individually or/and in groups. The results of the analyze are further discussed in the plenary session with the aim to develop students' ability to use theoretical gender background in the process of solving everyday situations in their lives and /or making decisions intheir professions.

    1. Gender oriented organizations and institutions in the Czech Republic, their activities and representatives.
    2. Sex and gender in current feminist discourse. Different forms of theoretical understanding of gender and disputes about how gender relations should be shaped: humanistic feminism (equality), feminism stressing sex differences, and/or gender deconstruction (distortion of gender duality)?
    3. Gender-sensitive education. Research and activities in the Czech Republic.
    4. Gender and labor market. Current situation in the Czech Republic.
    5. Gender and politics. Current situation in the Czech Republic.
    6. Gender relations in the family. Current situation in the Czech Republic.
    7. Motherhood and fatherhood, traditional model and its changes in the Czech Republic.
    8. Violence against women. Causes, legal state and possibility of change.
    9. Gender a media.
    10. Woman and man in the advertisement.
    11. Gender and language. Gender-sensitive use of language.
    12. Gender mainstreaming. Aim, development and experiences form its implementation in the western countries.
    13. Gender mainstreaming. Tools of gender analysis in organizations. Concept of 4-R.
    SEMINAR
    1. Introduction to contents and methods of seminar work.
    2. Mapping the possibilities and limitations of particular theoretical gender concepts (theoretical analysis).
    3. Implementation of gender-sensitive pedagogy (case study).
    4. How to solve the problem of gender segregation of labor market (simulation of meeting of the Commission for Equal Chances at Ministry of Labor and Social Issues).
    5. Current women in the politics at the Czech Republic - their view on gender problems (analysis of interviews with women-politicians).
    6. Division of labor in nowadays Czech families (research and its analysis).
    7. Fathers at family leave in the Czech Republic (cases and their analysis).
    8. Domestic violence against women (cases and their analysis).
    9. So-called women journals and picture of gender relations they offer (contents analysis).
    10. Advertisements in the television through gender lenses (contents analysis).
    11. Gender-offensive use of language in our everyday life (cases and their analysis).
    12. Gender analysis of organizations (case study using 4-R).
    13. Gender analysis of organizations (ideas for solution and discussion in the plenary session).
