Course objectives
The course is conceived as a theoretical-practical one. It supplies knowledge and skills necessary to provide first aid. Students will acquire knowledge of the principles of first aid in a variety of health-damaging conditions. The course includes findings from the field of disaster medicine, emergency services and crisis management.
The course describes common causes and symptoms of selected conditions (e.g. injuries to the head, chest, extremities; burns, etc.). The main emphasis is placed on basic and extended cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Having completed the course, the students will gain orientation in recommended procedures (guidelines) for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as cardial resuscitation issued by the European Resuscitation Council.
Learning outcomes
Professional knowledge: Students can describe the symptoms and causes of acute injuries. They can define best practices for CPR and describe the significance of crisis management and disaster medicine.

Professional skills: Students are able to provide CPR and first aid for individual injuries effectively.

General qualification: Students are able to evaluate injuries and organize the wounded in a sequence, then treat the wounded.

Competences: Having completed the course, the students will orient themselves in the field of first aid, CPR, etc.
Syllabus
  • 1. Significance and provision of first aid, prioritizing
  • 2. Disaster medicine, integrated emergency services, teamwork
  • 3. Premed first aid - stab and slash wounds, gunshot
  • 4. Injuries by animals, snakebites. Introduction to bandaging techniques.
  • 5. Bleeding– internal, external, arterial, venous, mixed, states of shock
  • 6. First aid for choking, drowning. Damage by heat, cold, electric current, chemicals.
  • 7. Spasmodic states, fractures
  • 8. Serious injuries - head and central nervous system, spine and spinal cord, neck, chest, abdomen, large bones, joints and pressure injuries.
  • 9. Serious conditions in the elderly: dyspnea, acute myocardial infarction, cramps
  • 10. Serious conditions in the elderly: stroke, coma, and intoxication
  • 11. Basics of cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • 12. Monitoring health condition of the patient.
  • 13. Positioning and transport of afflicted individuals.
