Course objectives
The course concentrates on the area of research with its applications in healthcare. It defines research as an important part of identifying relevant data and information for improved health prevention, care and treatment. The general part is divided into basic research areas where concepts in both basic and applied research are defined. The main part focuses on methodology of quantitative and qualitative research, including understanding of basic philosophy, techniques of quantitative data gathering (questionnaire survey, retrospective analysis) and qualitative data gathering (interview, observation, case reports). The course objective is to acquaint students with the basic methodological principles in scientific methodology of the discipline and teach them how to design, implement and evaluate a simple empirical survey in the area of healthcare.
Learning outcomes
Technical knowledge and skills:
Having completed the course, students will know how to:
- design simple research in the topic and develop it into the form of research questions, including research project plan,
- Explain the principles of EBP (EBN),
- explain the principles of quantitative and qualitative research,
- use basic statistics and selected qualitative research methods for data processing,
- describe the principles and the different stages of research design,
- respect the ethical and legal framework of clinical research and the ethics of scientific work,
- process a research project and defend it.

General qualification: Students can design and implement basic empirical measurements, processes an empirically oriented project and implement the EBP method.

Competences: They are able to: monitor research and development in the field, work using the EBP method and use the results to develop care in terms of quality and safety. Manage their compete participation in research projects.
Syllabus
  • 1. Ways of assessing quantitative data - quantitative table, mean values, graphs.
  • 2. Qualitative research, methodology - basic principles and procedures.
  • 3. Evidence-based practice - EBP (EBN).
  • 4. Formulation of individual research problem, searching relevant studies in Czech and foreign sources.
  • 5. Creation and presentation of a research project.
  • 6. Instruction in person is conducted through a system of consultations on selected topics. For instruction, students are hereby.
