Course objectives
The course is conceived as a theoretical-practical one. It introduces students to the general properties of microorganisms and basic knowledge of bacteriology, virology, parasitology and mycology. It introduces them to the principles of safety at risk workplaces. Students acquire a detailed understanding of the principles of proper collection and transfer of infectious material, and familiarize themselves with the most important microbiological laboratory examination methods. The course introduces to basic knowledge of immunology, organism immunity and vaccination and with basic immunological techniques, examinations and treatments. Students are also introduced to the issues of epidemiology and hygiene.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: Students can define basic methods of microbiology and epidemiology with an emphasis on preventing hospital infections and vocational contagion and on basic understanding of the principles of prevention and management of disease groups.
Professional Skills: Students are able to navigate the clinical microbiological and immunological methods used in diagnostic processes.
General Qualification: Students can use their knowledge in the prevention of hospital infections and vocational contagion.
Competences: Students perform their work experience, providing care for clients according to the latest findings in the field, complying with the principles of asepsis and antisepsis, can provide accurate and adequate information in relevant fields.
Syllabus
  • 1. Status of medical microbiology, infectious medicine and epidemiology in the system of human health. Legislation and legal provisions relating to the protection against the spread of infectious diseases.
  • 2. Relationship between macro and microorganisms and its importance in maintaining human health, or developing a disease.
  • 3. Significant bacterial and viral agents in humans.
  • 4. Features and division of infections by agents of their origin.
  • 5. Hospital infections.
  • 6. Vocational contagion. Viral hepatitis, other viral diseases and their significance in healthcare.
  • 7. Main sources of the spread of infectious agents in hospitals and institutions ensuring care of humans.
  • 8. Estimation of the risk of exposure to infectious agents to the state of health of the human population.
  • 9. Basic knowledge of epidemiology, clinical studies, evidence-based medicine.
  • 10. Methods of prevention and monitoring of infectious disease groups.
  • 11. Methods of asepsis.
  • 12. Methods of antisepsis, decontamination.
  • 13. Disinfection and sterilization.
