Course objectives
The objectives of the course Communication with the elderly I is to increase knowledge and enhance communication skills of students in the field of social communication with the elderly The lecture series deals with group communication with the elderly and developing their communication skills, prevention and resolution of conflicts with seniors, communication strategies with challenging types of the elderly, specifics of communication with seniors in palliative care and their relatives. The theoretical knowledge will be transferred into practice immediately.
Learning outcomes
Professional knowledge: Students know and understands the processes of group dynamics for group work with the elderly, the concept for the development of their communication skills, the causes of conflict and mechanisms of its resolution, difficult types of seniors and appropriate communication strategies. Students know the specifics of communication and desirable communication procedures in the field of palliative care.

Professional skills:Students can effectively use efficient means of communication in individual and group work with the elderly, taking into account the specifics of the target group and developing the communication skills of seniors in an appropriate extent. They can address the causes of conflict and avoid conflicts preemptively, or resolve existing conflicts, thereby minimizing their negative impact on the seniors and their surroundings. Students can communicate with difficult types of seniors and choose effective communication strategies. Students can choose appropriate communication strategies with seniors in palliative care and communicate with their relatives. Students can apply the information and skills in practice. They are able to integrate the acquired knowledge with the needs of their practice.

General qualification: Student are able to communicate with different types of seniors, including difficult types, and select the appropriate negotiation strategy in conflict situations. Students are qualified to work with individuals and groups of seniors, capable of communicating with seniors and their relatives in palliative care.

  • 5. Specifics of communication with the elderly with communication or consciousness impairment.
  • 6. Specifics of communication with seniors with physical and sensory disabilities.
  • 7. Specifics of communication with seniors with dementia, mental or mental illness, and under the influence of drugs.
  • 8. Specifics of communication with difficult types of seniors (aggressive, depressed and anxious types).
  • 9. Specifics of communication with difficult types of seniors (neurotic, narcissistic and pedantic types).
  • 10. Specifics of communication with difficult types of seniors (inaccessible and histrionic types).
  • 11. Specifics of communication in palliative care.
  • 12. Social work with the dying.
  • 13. Specifics of communication with the mourning.
