Course objectives
The subject Basics of deaf-blindness as a part of special pedagogy defines the content of teaching in the following areas: relation of deaf-blindness to other sciences, interconnection of deaf-blindness and speech therapy, interdisciplinary cooperation. The subject characterizes the field of terminology in surdopedia; physiology of the auditory analyzer, auditory perception, including the etiology, classification and characteristics of individual hearing defects. It provides a historical outline of the development of education and training of the hearing impaired in our country and abroad, including a cultural perspective on the issue of the deaf as a cultural minority and a linguistic minority. The aim is also to obtain a basic overview of the organization of care for the hearing impaired, early care, care in preschool and school age; on the current system of institutional care for the hearing impaired in the Czech Republic; on the inclusion of pupils with hearing impairments and current trends in the education of the hearing impaired. The content of the course allows to gain knowledge from diagnostics and special pedagogical diagnostics in deafness, including psychological peculiarities of the hearing impaired. Outlines the theory and practice of education and training of the hearing impaired in the following areas: methodology of language and communication education in terms of age and degree of hearing impairment; didactic principles of education of the hearing impaired, communication systems of the hearing impaired and basics of specific communication skills necessary for communication with the hearing impaired, therapy, intervention, compensatory, technical and teaching aids for the hearing impaired, counseling system and current legislation in terms of support education for the hearing impaired.
Learning outcomes
Expertise:
- the student will gain insight into the issues of deafness, the importance of hearing and auditory perception for humans from the perspective of etiology, physiology and pathology of the auditory analyzer
- the student will gain an overview of the theoretical foundations of visual motor communication systems and their use in surdopedic intervention, an overview and application of basic diagnostic examination methods, specifics in speech therapy intervention with individuals with hearing impairment
- the student is familiar with and obtains an overview of the counseling system and service providers for individuals with hearing impairment, the possibilities of professional orientation of individuals with SP, knowledge of the specifics of compensatory aids for individuals with SP
Professional skills:
- the student orients himself and obtains an overview of the types and degrees of hearing impairment, hearing examination methods, an overview of the criteria for assessing speech development based on the specific manifestations of non-verbal and verbal communication of individuals with hearing impairment
- student applies basic knowledge, principles and differences in primary communication with the hearing impaired, uses basic rules, methods and approaches in education and reeducation of hearing impaired individuals
- the student uses the acquired knowledge in order to determine the basic intervention procedures for the comprehensive development of individuals with SP, the application of selected alternative communication systems in individuals with SP
General competences:
- The student applies knowledge, specific peculiarities in the development of an individual with a hearing impairment for his further development of personality, the development of communication
- the student applies a modification of diagnostic-intervention procedures and approaches with individuals with hearing impairment
- the student acquires basic competencies for interaction and intervention in the process of education of children and pupils with hearing impairment
- the student prepares professional special pedagogical, preventive and activating support measures for individuals with SP, interpersonal communication and cooperation in an inter-ministerial framework

  • 7. Communication and communication styles ̶ audiooral communication systems and visual motor communication systems; basics of communication behavior; basics of specific communication skills usable for functional communication with individuals with hearing impairment.
  • 8. Didactic principles and specifics of different characteristics of visual perception of hearing; global reading, initial reading, oral speech and its characteristics, finger alphabet - one-handed and two-handed dactyl, sign languages ​​of the severely hearing impaired.
  • 9. Basic and methodical approaches in education and upbringing of individuals with hearing impairment, specifics of communication skills, usable for functional communication with individuals with hearing impairment.
  • 10. Input diagnostic methods in individuals with hearing impairment; screening, screening, early intervention.
  • 11. The role of speech therapist / surdopeda in education and reeducation of hearing.
  • 12. Compensatory, technical and teaching aids for individuals with hearing impairment. Application and solution of model situations that arise when working with individuals with hearing impairment.

Teacher's information
In course of continuous study, students use the study material, processing it to fulfil selected correspondence assignments which will be discussed in conclusion of the course. At the exam, students demonstrate knowledge of compulsory literature and lectures of the in-person instruction. Students will be able to continuously consult the topics studied individually or in teams, via e-mail, or in consultations upon request.
