Course objectives
The course is conceived as a theoretical-practical one. The course content forms the basis for further study of presents basic concepts of the theory and practice of the field, its philosophy, and the historical aspect of development of midwifery in the context of medicine. The aim is to inform students and teach them to work with the various methods for assessing and diagnosing the needs of clients in health and disease through selected theories and models and apply them in case studies, taking into account the specific needs of the clients and their families; it navigates the issues of health and disease, characterizes the global, European and national health management strategy; it explains the concept of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention and care; describes the concept of the field in proper terms; understands and defines the field as a scientific discipline; explains the concept of holism; uses erudite professional terminology; navigates the organizational systems of midwifery work and the basic concepts in the field of care quality management; characterizes and enables the application of selected models and theories in professional practice; provides good understanding of the management of non-medical education in the field and in professional organizations; explains the system of management in the field; navigates the issues of human needs in health and disease, with an emphasis on the needs of women and their families. The needs are set in the context of the methods of the process of providing care in midwifery. It also familiarises students with a multicultural dimension in midwifery care of individual needs of women, families and communities, with the main tasks and functions of midwifery in society.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: Students are familiar with the development of midwifery.
Professional Skills: Students describes the historical background of midwifery in the Czech Republic and in the global context; can explain the concept of holism and apply it in the selected model.
General Qualification: Students are familiar with the issues of health and disease, characterized by global, European and national health management strategy; they can explain the concept of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention and care; they can describe the concept of the field in proper terms; they can understand and define the field as a scientific discipline.

  • 1. History of midwifery, characteristic of midwifery as a scientific discipline. Nursing process.
  • 2. Holism and its roots. Development of education in midwifery, midwifery competencies.
  • 3. Nursing process.
  • 4. Function of a midwife. The role of the midwife in the nursing process.
  • 5. Professional organizations in midwifery, research.
  • 6. Primary, secondary and tertiary care. The concept of health and disease.
  • 7. Metaparadigm and paradigm of midwifery, philosophical concepts and conceptual models.
  • 8. Human needs, with an emphasis on the needs of women.
  • 9. Introduction to community care.
  • 10. Multicultural dimension of providing care in midwifery.
