Course objectives
The course is designed as a theoretical and practical unit. The content forms the core of professional skills of paediatric nurses and belongs to the complex of basic professional subjects. Based on theoretical knowledge, it teaches nursing performance techniques and procedures for nursing care of children of all ages. Emphasis is placed on a holistic approach to the child, the biopsychosocial aspects of care, and on adherence to clinical recommendations in concert with the latest scientific findings and advances in technology. Individual nursing procedures and techniques are taught in concert with a multidisciplinary approach to the child, in collaboration with the child's parents, accepting their rights and those of the child, and observing the rules of occupational health and safety.
Learning outcomes
Expertise: The student has knowledge of the organizational structure of the hospital, types of nursing units. The student has knowledge of the prevention of healthcare associated infections and the principles of barrier nursing care. The student has knowledge of age-appropriate enteral and parenteral nutrition for children. The student has knowledge of urinary and fecal emptying of the child. Vocational Skills: The student is able to handle the child correctly and safely. The student is able to demonstrate hygienic care of the child. The student is able to select proper techniques for monitoring the vital signs of the child. The student is able to select appropriate methods to reduce pain in the child. The student can administer medications considering the age of the child. General Competency (Competencies): The student ensures compliance with the hygiene-epidemiological regime in accordance with the legislation governing the protection of public health. The student observes the principles of preparing and serving food to children of all ages, including the use of alternative serving methods. The student monitors and assesses children's vital signs. The student assesses and treats ostomies. The student cares for  established urinary catheters in children of all ages, including performing bladder rinses.
Syllabus
  • 1. Organizational structure of the hospital, organization of care for children, introduction to the nursing unit, competences of the pediatric nurse and other non-medical health care workers, organization of the nurse's work in the nursing unit. 2-3. Care of the hospital bed, prevention of healthcare associated infections, barrier nursing care. Disinfection, sterilization. 4. Handling of the child, nursing procedures in providing hygienic care for the child. Nursing procedures for a child with a stoma. 5. Nursing procedures for food intake, feeding techniques for children. Administration of nutrition through probes, using PEG. Gastric lavage in the child. 6. Nursing procedures for emptying urine and stool in children. 7. Nursing procedures for monitoring vital signs in children 8. Nursing procedures during medication administration - theoretical introduction. 9. Nursing procedures in oral administration of drugs to children. 10. Nursing procedures in the topical administration of drugs to children. Nursing procedures in a child with a pain.

Teaching methods
Lecture, instruction, demonstration, role-play, discussion, self-study.
Assessment methods
Fulfillment of 80% attendance in classes, demonstration of activity, theoretical and practical knowledge continuously during the course (a student who for serious reasons could not attend the compulsory classes, the teacher will determine an alternative way of fulfilling the study obligations), preparation and presentation of a seminar paper, written credit.

Mgr. Petra Šimánková Contact teaching is conducted by a system of consultations of practical demonstrations with active participation of students and lectures on selected topics. The combined part of the study is also implemented in the e-learning course environment on the e-portal http://elearning.fvp.slu.cz/. For teaching, study aids including correspondence assignments are available to students. The course is completed with a credit, in which the student demonstrates knowledge of the basic and selected recommended literature and is able to discuss the developed correspondence assignments. The student will be able to consult individually studied course topics on an ongoing basis through individual or group consultations or email.
