Course objectives
The aim of the course is for students to gain a comprehensive overview of the structure and characteristics of undergraduate study, to become familiar with key academic resources and to be able to effectively search and work with literature relevant to their field of study. Students will learn to apply the rules of academic writing, including proper citation, paraphrasing, and compiling bibliographic records according to current standards. They will also learn the skills needed to work in university systems, such as searching for course texts, syllabi and other materials, and gain the ability to navigate university regulations and organizational structure. Overall, students will be prepared to approach academic tasks independently and responsibly, to make use of available resources and to engage effectively in university studies.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
describe the structure of a degree programme and explain the basic functions of university information systems,
locate and evaluate scholarly journals and articles within their field of study,
annotate a scholarly text and compile a summary from multiple sources,
design the structure of a seminar paper according to academic rules,
write the introduction and conclusion of a professional text according to the methodological guidelines,
correctly cite and paraphrase academic texts according to the given rules.
Academic information literacy
Ability to search for books, articles, course texts, and other scholarly materials through library and university databases.
Orientation to electronic systems (e.g. IS.SLU) and ability to use repositories, online databases and academic portals.
Ability to analyse, interpret and synthesise information from academic sources.
Proper use of citations, paraphrasing, and adherence to academic standards for bibliographic references.
Knowledge of the rules of academic writing and plagiarism prevention.
Ability to use primary and secondary sources in an appropriate manner. Ability to locate and apply university regulations, policies, and procedures (e.g., student regulations, guidelines).
Effective communication with academic staff and orientation to university structure (e.g., locating staff and tutoring hours).

  • 7. Rules for working with the text - quoting, paraphrasing, note-taking
  • 8. Bibliographic citations of documents according to valid citation standards
  • 9. Special features of citations for electronic sources.
