Course objectives
During the lectures, students learn about an introduction to the provincial archeology, history of research and methods of occupation of the new territories by the Romans. Attention is paid to the formation and development of the limit in the Roman empire (Britannia, Europe, Asia and Africa), as well as the beginnings of the Roman presence in the area and building of first fortifications across the constitution of limit. More details are also mentioned the structure of the Roman legions and auxiliary forces, the structure of the camps and limit development in the late period. The main attention is paid to the important sites of Roman provinces (history of individual cities, architecture and artwork associated with the site). The lecture cycle also introduces significant civilizations, cultures and archaeological sites in the Mediterranean and the Middle East, which were influenced by Greek and Roman civilization and also influenced the Greek and Roman civilization.

  • 1. Characteristics of a course, its methods, history and the main themes
    2. The Etruscans (geometric period, archaic period, classical and hellenistic periods)
    3. Central Europe before the coming of the Romans, the new provinces and their structure
    4. The Roman army and its structure (weapons and equipment of the Roman legions and auxiliary forces, camps, militaria)
    5. Limes Romanus (characteristics of the limit, the border of provinces in Britain, on the Rhine and the Danube River, in Asia, Africa, limes in Germania Superior, Upper Germanic limes I (sections 1-5) and II (sections 6-11), Raetian limes I (sections 12-15) and II (Regensburg-Passau), Norick and Pannonian limes, limes on the lower Danube
    6. Provincial housing estate I (construction technologies, materials of vici, Canabae)
    7. Provincial housing estate II (cities, public buildings, houses, baths and aqueducts)
    8. Villa rustica, agriculture
    9. Routes and trade, peripheral areas of the ancient world
    10. Religion of Roman provinces, the funeral rite in the provinces in the 1st - 4th century AD
    11. Roman province and relationships to our country in the 1st - 4th century AD
    12. Terra sigillata (technology, typology, chronology, production centers)
