Course objectives
The aim of the course is for the students to acquire the ability to identify English sounds and their correct pronunciation and to understand the phonological system of English pronunciation as compared to Czech. In order to do that, students must master phonological transcription and fluent reading.

  • 1. Basic categories, speech organs, RP, IPA
    2. English short vowels
    3. English long vowels, diphthongs and triphthongs
    4. English plosives
    5. English fricatives and affricates
    6. Nasals and consonant clusters
    7. Pronunciation of r, l, j, w
    8. Stress (derived words, compounds)
    9. Weak forms
    10. Rhythm
    11. Assimilation, linking and elision
    12. Phonological transcription
