Course objectives
The subject acquaints students with the fundamentals of Solids state physics, whereas the students are expected to have knowledge of quantum mechanics fundametals.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- master mathematical fomulation of crystal lattices construction,
- be able to solve equations of motion of crystal lattice vibrations using harmonics approximation,
- understand the concept of phonon and priciples of superconductivity in deep mathematical and physical level
Syllabus
  • Main topics of the subject:
    • Crystal lattice, its translation symmetry and reciprocal lattice,
    • Bloch functions and Brillouine zone,
    • Approximation of close binding and band structure,
    • Metals, conductors, semiconductors and insulators,
    • Vibrations of crystal lattice, Born-Oppenheimer approximation and electron and vibration motions separation,
    • Equations of motion of crystal lattice vibrations in  harmonics approximation,
    • Proper vibrations of crystal lattice,
    • Fonons, electron gas, Hartree-Fock approximation and corelation energy,
    • Excitons and magnons,
    • Electron-fonon approximation and superconductivity.
