Course objectives
The subject aims at familiarizing the students with selected chapters in biophysics and its application in diagnostic and therapeutic medical methods. The subject describes biophysical principles used in medical and nursing practice. The subject covers the area of thermodynamics, cellular biophysics, organ and sensory biophysics, as well as ionizing radiation and protection. On completion of the course, the student will be orientated in the relationship between measured biosignals (ECG) or vital signs (pressure, temperature) and underlying biophysical mechanisms of the human body.

  • 1. Physical variable and units.
    2. Thermodynamics and molecular biophysics.
    3. Cell biophysics.
    4. Tissue and organ biophysics.
    5. Biophysics of perception and senses, environmental biophysics.
    6. Effects of heat, thermometry. Biorhythms.
    7. Sources and types ionizing radiation, detection of ionizing radiation.
    8. Biological effects of ionizing radiation.
    9. Demonstration of medical devices, special requirements.
    10. Working with electrical appliances, risks and precautions in electrical appliances.
    11. Electric power supplies and distribution systems in health care.
    12. Basic facts in optics.

Requirements for credit: 100 % participation in practicals (students who could not meet attendance criteria due to serious obstacles will be given extra assignments by the tutor according to the number of lessons missed).
