Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the student to the basic principles of non-surgical and surgical therapy. In this course, the student deepens the interpretation of radiographs and OPG images, learns about surgical therapy and the role of the dental hygienist in this treatment.
Learning outcomes
Professional knowledge: the student is oriented in the therapy of periodontopathies and understands the principles of repair and regeneration.
Professional Skills: The student is able to determine a preliminary treatment plan, prepare the patient for surgical therapy and care for him/her after this treatment, deepens his/her skills in subgingival treatment.
General Competency: The student is able to explain the nature of surgical and nonsurgical therapy.
Competency: the student understands the basic principles of therapy and tissue healing, and can interpret radiographs.
Syllabus
  • Seminars:
  • 1. Healing of periodontal tissues (regeneration, repair).
  • 2. Non-surgical therapy of periodontitis - principles, division, examination, diagnosis.
  • 3. Surgical therapies surgical therapies - closed and open curettage, gingivectomy, gingivoplasty, flap surgery.
  • 4. Controlled tissue regeneration
  • 5. Plastic and mucogingival therapy
  • Exercise:
  • 1. Assisting DH in surgical treatment - preparing the patient for surgery, postoperative care.
  • 2. Examination and treatment of the implant.
  • 3. X-ray and OPG image interpretation, diagnosis.
  • 4. Practical training of supra and subgingival treatment on models.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: 100% attendance at the training (students who could not attend compulsory instruction for serious reasons will be assigned an alternative way of fulfilling their study requirements). Passing a credit test requires 80% success rate.
