Course objectives
The course intorduces students to the etiology of mental aberrations, common types of stressful situations and pertinent defence mechanisms/flight responses. During the course, students should: get an overview of the variability of human psyche and an overview of mental disorders, learn key issues in the area of mental health of ill and/or handicapped citizens, become knowledgeable about selected mental and behavioural disorders. Syllabus
  • Lectures:
    1.Mechanisms of interindividual variability in human mentality
    2.Overview of mental dysfunctions
    3. Cognitive disorders (perception, memory, thinking, speech)
    4. Emotional and motivational disorders (emotions, instincts, volition)
    5. Impaired consciousness (quantitative impairment, qualitative impairment), attention disorder
    6. Personality disorders
    7. Psychological assessment, strategies in diagnostics, diagnosis of psychospiritual crisis
    8. Psychological issues in social pathology (dysfunctional family environment, negative social influence, occupational and economic factors, delinquency and penitentiary care)
    Practical sessions:
    1. Lifestyle issues - dysbalance and addiction
    2. Pervasive developmental disorders. Autism in children
    3. Neurotic disorders
    4. Suicidal behaviour
    5. Cult engagement and mental manipulation
    6. Family dysfunction issues - abuse and neglect
    7. Unemployment and homelessness. Sociocultural handicaps - immigrant inclusion and adaptation, Roma minorities
