- Course objectives
- The course introduces students to the complex issues of strategy and policy of population health care. It explains the importance of health determinants in human life and risk factors which negatively affect health and cause the development of diseases, affecting quality of life and causing death. The course introduces to the hitherto completed health policies and programmes of the WHO "Health for All, HFA” and "Health 21", including the European health policy for the 21st century "Health 2020" with their positive impact while achieving their goals not only for the Czech Republic. Health literacy along with health education are implemented jointly with the government institutions, the Ministry of Health and health insurances.
- Learning outcomes
- Professional Knowledge: Students demonstrate knowledge of the concepts of health and illness, health determinants, including knowledge of international and national activities for the health of the population. They can explain the differences between the existing healthcare systems. They are well versed in the issue of organizations providing health and social services. They understand the fundamental importance of the subject resting in the knowledge of the organization of health services, health policy and the organization of healthcare management.
Professional Skills: Students are able to effectively understand the issue of provision of health services, focus on the currently functioning healthcare systems and contribute to the achievement of international goals in both health and well-being.
General Qualification: By their expertise, students are prepared to be involved in organizing the public healthcare system, health insurance system and partly in protecting public health.
Competences: Students can become part of multidisciplinary teams and fulfil objectives set particularly by the WHO. They can both theoretically and practically actively participate in disease prevention and health promotion of individuals and communities . - Syllabus
- 1. The importance of studying public health, social status, assessor and review Medicine in the public health system and health policy.
- 2. Healthcare through the ages, the historical legacy of ethics, development of nursing care and medicine for the present.
- 3. Health and illness - basic concepts, models, definition of WHO, the differences between the concepts of health and illness, health potential, state of optimal well-being, socio-economic perspective of health, illness and its consequences.
- 4. The social significance of the value of health, criteria and the consequences of ill health.
- 5. Significance of the determinants of health in human life, determinants of risk factors of civilization diseases, mortality.
- 6. Determinants of negative effects worldwide. Principles of prevention of civilization diseases.
- 7. Solidarity and equity - meaning of the concepts for the present, definition according to WHO definition. Conditions of justice in health care and in the context of the emergence of sickness and health insurance, social inequality from the perspective of the present.
- 8. Health policy of the WHO, "Health Policy 21," Health 2020, health literacy, importance for the Czech Republic and Europe.
- 9. Study of population health and the health of the population in the Czech Republic in the European and global comparison. Basic features of demographic development in the Czech Republic and the EU.
- 10. Models of healthcare systems, their advantage, disadvantages and differences, indicators for international comparisons.
- 11. Healthcare organizations, types and prevention, system of healthcare facilities, healthcare workers, their work, erudition and lifelong learning, ethics in healthcare, providers of health services.
- 12. Importance of statistics and information system in healthcare, sociological methods, the International Classification of Diseases ICD-10, classification systems, health registries and programs.
- 13. The emergence of public healthcare, general and public health insurance, healthcare policy transformations in the Czech Republic after 1989, social significance and impact of amendments to the legislation, the beginning of privatization, creation of professional organizations, health insurance and health insurance companies.
- 14. Basic legal and sub-legal standards in the public health system. Legislation and education in healthcare.
- 15. Preventive programs and activities of health insurance companies for the consolidation of health of the insured. The issue of implementation of the quality level control of healthcare provided.
- 16. The role of a medical officer during control inspection activities, the impact of a medical officer on the creation and promotion of strategy for health insurance policies in the public health insurance system.
