Course objectives
The course is conceived as a theoretical-practical one. The course objective is to acquaint students with the basic procedures when communicating with clients of all ages including those with disabilities. The course also describes, in addition to communication with individuals, the importance of empathy in communication and the importance of mirroring in communication. Most attention is paid to the training of communication with people with various disabilities and socio-cultural differences. Having completed the course, students will be well versed in the issues of communication with clients of different ages and their relatives, as well as with clients with various disabilities, issues of properly maintained communication with an old person, a child, a person suffering from pain.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: Students can describe and explain the various aspects of communication with clients / patients in different age groups, including the disabled. They can propose suitable means of communication.
Professional Skills: Students are able to use the correctly chosen method of communication for people of different ages and types of disabilities.
General Qualification: Students are able to decide independently and choose the right type of communication responsibly.
Competences: Having completed the course, students can mediate the necessary information to individuals, families, groups, and their relatives in an appropriate form in terms of their competence and ensure that this information is understandable and that the results achieved in the awareness of clients / patients can be evaluated. Students will deepen and improve their acquired ability to communicate both with the individual and with the group of clients/patients in further study and clinical practice.
Syllabus
  • Lectures:
  • 1. Communication - definitions and concepts.
  • 2. Verbal communication.
  • 3. Bad habits in communication and removing them, response to disturbances and inquiries.
  • 4. Communication with a hearing impaired client.
  • 5. Communication with a visually impaired client.
  • 6. Communication with clients suffering from pain. Acute pain and chronic pain and its effects on communication.
  • 7. Communication and creation of healthy interpersonal relationships; imparting warmth, respect, sincerity.
  • 8. Mirroring in communication, mirroring techniques. Giving feedback in communication, positive feedback and negative feedback.
  • 9. Empathy in medical communication. Empathetic behaviour.

  • 1. Communication with the child. Specifics of communication according to the age of the child. Communication with an adolescent.
  • 2. Communication with adult clients.
  • 3. Differences in communication between men and women.
  • 4. Communication with a geriatric patient. The effect of limited sensory perception on communication in older age.
  • 5. Communication with clients with sensory defects.
  • 6. Communication with psychiatric patients, including people with mental retardation.
  • 7. Communication with individuals with mental disabilities.

Assessment methods
Credit requirements: 80% attendance at the seminars (students who could not attend compulsory instruction for serious reasons will be assigned an alternative way of fulfilling their study requirements).. Elaboration of seminar paper on an assigned topic in the range of 5-7 pages, and its defence.
